Herbert Hoover won his 1928 election bid by promising a "Chicken in Every Pot and a Car in Every Garage".
By the end of the Hoover presidency, the American economy was in ruins.
Barack Obama has been criticizing John McCain for ignoring the plight of of the American Family during the subprime loan crisis. While McCain has been urging government restraint in bailing out people, he has been pushing for greater transparency and stricter controls in lending agreements. Obama, has already pledged 10 billion dollars to aid families in this time of crisis.
I am by no means a fan of McCain, but the idea that the US Government should step in to bail folks out of their financial obligations is terrible to me. Lets just call it redistribution of wealth and be done with it. Money will be taken in the form of tax payments from families who were on top of their finances to bail out folks who should not have been home owners in the first place.
Where is it written that folks with a poor credit history are entitled to a house? And failing to be able to pay for that house, why is their poor planning and financial management to be placed on the backs of other takes payers? Not to sound cold, or harsh, but I grew up in a household where both my parents worked hard to earn their credit, and afford their modest house. They didn't get a break why should these folks?
I would much rather see a 10 billion dollar package to promote Financial Education in high school and state colleges as a mandatory course. Educate folks so that they do not fall into these kind of fiscal dilemmas.
